Telecommuters are happier with their jobs. People who can work from home on occasion statistically miss less work due to illnesses or other absences. Lucky for the modern office workforce, lots of companies offer flexible scheduling and opportunities to work from home as fringe benefits to keep top talent performing at optimal levels year round. According to the statistical information from this infographic from Citrix, this makes good business sense. A workshifting policy has been known to aid recruiting, enhance employee productivity, satisfaction, and retention, and support corporate diversity by attracting some of the best talent from all corners of the world. Allowing employees to work part or full time from home also help businesses to reduce capital and operating costs, particularly in organizations that implement virtual desktops that allow employees to operate in the same working environment whether in the office or on their own personal devices from home. In the course of one year, the savings from using less energy to operate work stations in the office can be substantial, even when employees only work from home once or twice a week. Many people believe this helps to create a truly green corporate culture with a smaller carbon footprint, and happy, healthy workers. To view the statistics, just click on the graphic below:

Most of us in the business world of corporate America have attended a few company picnics, holiday season parties, or other official after work get togethers that involved eating, drinking, and all that can sometimes go with that. Have you ever done something at an office party that you regretted for the rest of the year? Have you known someone else who got into an embarrassing situation after one too many glasses of bubbly at the office throw-down? Either way, you’re not alone. It happens all the time, can be the source of much regret and chagrin, and can even cost some people their jobs. Here are some things to avoid at the next office party to keep your reputation and job in tact:

1 — no tush on the office copier. I had to say it. Inevitably, someone at every office party winds up seated on the copier and getting their wares scanned. Don’t be that pinup boy or girl!

2 — unless you brought a date or spouse, stay off the dance floor. Things can get kind of crazy out there, and if there’s anything — anything at all — that you haven’t shared with your colleagues concerning cable internet bundles or secret office crushes, it’s going to come out under the disco light after a drink or two. Best advice: just don’t go there.

3 — if you are a boss, don’t give out the bonus checks at the party! People will be more likely to start comparing salaries. Save the bonus checks for a less conspicuous time.

4 — don’t sing. Just don’t! Unless you are part of the act hired to provide entertainment, stay far, far away from the microphone and the guitar. Remember that this is the office party, not karaoke night at the neighborhood pub.

5 — don’t overdo the drinking. Most of the world’s worst office party gaffes are the result of overindulgence in alcoholic beverages. There is little less flattering than the lone party animal swinging from the chandelier and kneeling before the porcelain god an hour later.

6 — keep all articles of clothing ON. Unless it is an overcoat or wrap (or maybe even your shoes) what you wore when you arrived should stay right where you put it.

7 — don’t hit on your boss. His wife or her husband will probably not be thrilled, and you could seriously jeopardize your job pulling s stunt like that. If your boss is single? Still don’t hit on her or him! They are your boss. Not only is it against company policy, unethical, and a conflict of interest — but it’s also tacky.

So, there are seven golden rules for avoiding awkward moments at the next office party. If you keep those in mind, you’ll be ready the next time an event rolls around.

Employees in corporate offices and cubicles all across America have probably all watched “The Office,” and laughed, cried, and daydreamed about the kind of boss they wish they really had. Someone a little crazy. Someone a tad off-color, but well meaning and generally supportive. Maybe he doesn’t have all the answers, all of the time. He might not even really understand you. But the kinds of qualities that most people agree make a good boss are more than just those things. Here are a few of the things employees value most in a boss:

He Works: some bosses don’t really spend much time working on the mission of the company. Most of their role involves supervision and reporting, and they don’t spend much time in the office. This can make them seem “out of touch” with employees. The best bosses, while not necessarily looming directly over everyone all the time, keep themselves busy and take on some of the work that keeps a company running from day to day. This evokes a sense of respect from employees, and inspires them to work hard, too.

He Plays: a good boss knows that it can’t always be “work work work” — even at work. He or she will occasionally do something to stir up a bit of a distraction or cause random acts of fun to happen. It provides a welcomed break for people around the office, and builds camaraderie. It also shows that a boss is human, too, and enjoys a break and a few laughs now and then.

He Cares: compassion is the most cited quality in a good boss. A person who has some sympathy with employees, who makes an effort to understand their circumstances (or, “where they’re coming from”) is most likely to be admired and respected by not only his employees, but also his professional peers.

He Respects Employees as Professionals: sure, the boss may not love everything about you — but that isn’t necessary. What matters the most is that he respects his employees as professionals in their field and treats them accordingly. These people were hired for a reason. Hopefully, not nepotism — but even then, there are redeeming qualities in everyone, and a good boss is skilled at identifying those and bringing out the best in everyone.

He Wants to Keep People Employed: in this fallen economy, the jobs market has devolved from a sunny summer landscape to a gray, post-apocalyptic nightmare. Downsizing is a very real threat that is sometimes the only solution, and everyone knows this — but a good boss makes the preservation of his team’s jobs a huge priority. He might seem harsh sometimes, trying to get things done faster and more efficiently — but he wants to save your job, and that’s why.

He Knows What You Do for a Living: an understanding of everyone’s role in the company and the unique contributions they all make to keeping things running is an exceptional quality in any boss. It also gives him an insider’s edge as to what motivates each person and what the flow of productivity within the corporation is. This boss will soon understand whose work depends on who else’s, and can better help smooth out rough spots for everyone, thanks to his keen observations and suggestions.

The rest of the ad is known to billions. Building a brand for your website is essential, but not always easy. Millions have been spent on advertising that sticks in the mind of consumers, we all know the rest of Choosy Mothers Choose… but does anyone remember the advertising for Beta Max? No, really, do they? Branding has become the Holy Grail of marketing efforts, resulting in untold millions of hours devoted to finding just the right angle. So how does the single owner/operator of a niche web site become a household name? One step at a time like everything else. Building blocks such as defining your niche, providing great content, easy secure forms, promoting and marketing your site, and being able to deliver what visitors want.

Cute commercials may win awards, but if the commercial, not the company or product, is what is remembered the message has failed. Keeping the message simple and directly to the point is easier to remember than a flashy logo design that is irrelevant to the company. Simple implies authority on the subject at hand, so keep this in mind when building a site, and filling it with content. How many sites have you seen that have all kinds of flashy graphics and backgrounds that made it difficult to read or navigate?
Your own personal taste must take a back seat to what the visitor wants and needs, since you will be building for them. The easier your site is to navigate, the more likely the visitor will be to explore it, and share it with a friend. Keep your message consistent, and your brand will develop in front of you. All aspects of branding boil down to what people will associate your company with, and the most unlikely idea can sometimes be the right one. Don’t be afraid to try new approaches, as long as they are relevant to your content.
Focus on what you are doing right with your company, and keep going in that direction, a lesson learned from New Coke and Pepsi Clear. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Doing things the right way won’t make the news, but do it wrong one time and look out. A consistent message will establish a brand of sorts in the minds of the public, and if there is a logo that relates, so much the better. Think about it in terms of your local tv cable company.

Choosing a logo to help establish your brand can be a time consuming chore, or as simple as using a picture to establish what your company is all about. The key is to determine what it is you want to accomplish first. If you want a website devoted to vegetarians, the Weinermobile is obviously a poor choice for a logo. Use what you know about your potential visitors and try to determine what they would associate with your web site.
Keeping your site updated increases your branding ability by showcasing your site and all that it offers to visitors. Using a logo or similar image in all updates and electronic notifications will increase your brand visibility and recognition.

Cheap advertising is great, not as great as free, but what can you do? With all the tools available for a small business on the internet, advertising opportunities abound for those who know how and where to look. Some of the methods that follow are free to use, but will take time, which is not cheap for an entrepreneur. The goal of these methods is to establish your website as the go-to place for all things related to your niche or business.

Method One- Article marketing to increase traffic. Using keywords, write, or have written, articles that offer good quality information on your selected topic. Tease the reader into clicking on your resource box to learn more of what you know on the subject. Article directories are free to join, as are content sites. The only expense, as noted, is your time, or the fees paid to a writer to create your articles. When you pay for an article to be written, you have the right to list yourself as the author, so be sure it is the quality you would sign your name to.

Method Two- Social Media sites. Mostly free to sign up for, create a page for your company and website. Post a link to it on your personal page, and get others to become fans, or “like” your page. This will also take some time, keeping up with posting updates and reading what visitors have to say. Stay on top of this, since it could be a goldmine of information.

Method Three- Give away information. If you are an expert in the subject your website covers, write a short e-book or report about it, convert it to PDF and give it away on your site, on social media networks and through e-mails. Never spam, simply offer it to whoever clicks the link for it. Include links to your relevant pages, or any affiliate links you have that fit into the topic being written about. Open Office Suite is a good program to use to write and convert your information, and it is free to download from their site. Once you have the PDF file, it can be sent as an e-mail link to whoever requests it. If you are giving away free downloads, be careful and follow all music piracy protection laws.

Method Four- Get your Blog on. Blogs are free to use, and with keyword research and SEO content can drive traffic to your site. Many blogs have features that will allow affiliate and web page links, and you can write as many posts as you like.

Method Five- Tweet you heart out. Sign up for and utilize a Twitter account. Short updates that will lead followers to check out your site for more information sent out on a regular basis can drive massive amounts of traffic to your site. Used wisely, it can be one of your most valuable tools.

Method Six- Pay per Click. A small budget set aside for advertising, using selected keywords, can be a huge boost to your website. An amount limit can be set, so you will not have to worry about going over budget, once the limit is hit, the ad stops.
